FBI, DoJ to head inquiry
According to AP, the DoJ and the FBI are going to be handling the investigation into the Plame leak initially. The article states that Ashcroft has not ruled out an independent investigator yet.
In addition to the fact that Ashcroft is a Bush appointee, there are a number of other reasons why an independent prosecutor must be appointed in this case: Billmon and Daily Kos explain why (while at Billmon, check out the other posts, especially this one on why the CIA has pursued the route it has.
